DESIGN THINKING AND STRATEGIC SYNERGIES

Today, more than ever, with heavy competition both in national and international markets, business owners must think about how their company or product will stand out in a sea of visual clutter and consumer overload. Many companies understand that little “d” design is important — they know that an effective logo or brochure can help them communicate their company's goals or connect emotionally with consumers, but few truly understand and use design as a strategic asset. Design is often thought of as a creative and finite endeavor: Identify a project; execute the art; put it into the marketplace. Big “D” design is defined by connection, the design disciplines (graphic, interior, industrial, architectural) working together and influencing one another. “D” design is about this synergy and developing a holistic approach to design; it connects design with fields like business, engineering and psychology by strategies based on thoughtful analysis and planning.

Traditional definitions of design focus on the process of design. They lack the connection with business processes or strategy development that are integral to today's design. The evolution to a broader definition of design is the recognition of the wide-ranging impact that has transformed traditional design disciplines, moving design (with a small d) to Design.
